Many people know licorice as the anise-flavored candy, which is traditionally made from the root of the plant of the same name. The root of Glycyrrhiza glabra is used as an herbal medicine in traditional medicine systems throughout the globe, most notably in Traditional Chinese medicine as well as north African, Middle Eastern, and European traditions.
Licorice is easily identifiable by taste-- it has a strong sweetness to it, which comes from the presence of glycyrrhizin, a saponin that our taste buds perceive as sweet. Licorice is in the bean family, Fabaceae, and can be grown with relative ease.
Medicinally, licorice is used as a soothing, moistening herb and for its ability to enhance the synergy of formulas. It is considered an adaptogen-- and is particularly supportive to hormone balance.
