Lady's mantle, Alchemilla vulgaris, is a rose family herb. Like many Rosaceae, it has long been valued for it's cooling, astringent properties. Lady's mantle has an affinity for the pelvic organs, but is also used to heal lesions and tonify the skin. The Latin name Alchemilla derives from the fact that the cup-shaped leaves have an almost magical ability to hold dew drops, even on particularly dry days of summer. It has been said that alchemists would use the dew drops from lady's mantle exclusively as the water component of their preparations. This ability to hold water is a doctrine of signatures for the plant, as it mirrors the herb's ability to help the human body retain fluids and maintain proper balance within.
