Occasionally digestive distress can be due to a broader, underlying imbalance in the gut. Poor quality foods, food allergies, antibiotic use or stress can lead to inflammation in the gut that is the source of indigestion or discomfort. In this case, relief may be achieved with longer term use of healing plants.
There are three major categories of herbs that can help with healing. Demulcent herbs have a mucilaginous consistency that coats and soothes the GI lining, reducing irritation. Digestive anti-inflammatory herbs may reduce sensations of heat or burning. Vulnerary herbs promote tissue healing and repair. In this class we'll talk about all three of these categories and participants will get to try samples.
Taught by Nick Cavanaugh. Nick is a clinical herbalist at the Burlington Herb Clinic and a staff member at Railyard Apothecary. As a clinical herbalist, he works with clients in-depth on health challenges that they face, such as digestive discomfort, mental or emotional imbalance, or chronic illness. He is a graduate of the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism's 3-year clinical herbalist training program. Learn more about Nick's work at www.nickherbalist.com.
