Part one in a series.
Join us for the first in a series of classes dedicated to the use of herbs in spirits and cocktails. In this experiential class, we will be focusing on gin! We will begin with a brief history of how gin styles evolved in different parts of the world. Next there will be a blind tasting of six gins, moving into tasting several individual herbs that are commonly found in gin. We will learn about why tonic pairs so well with gin, and teach you how to make it yourself. Attendants will each get a full-sized cocktail using the tonic made in the class. They will take home a bottle of tonic along with the recipe.
With the deepened sensory, botanical, and historical understanding of gin gained from this class, participants will be better equipped to create fresh, creative cocktails at home and behind the bar.
Taught by Emma Merritt and Ian Hood.
Emma is a clinical herbalist at Burlington Herb Clinic and Railyard Apothecary and a professionally trained bartender. Ian is a professional bartender and sommelier. He has over twenty years of experience studying and teaching in various fields including sustainable agriculture, wine, beer, and spirits and cocktails.
Emma and Ian have been collaborating since 2016 on various projects that incorporate foraging, herbalism and the craft of bartending. The inspiration for this class series came from their shared understanding of and appreciation for plant magic in the world of craft spirits.
Future classes in the series:
-Amaro
-Bitters and Tinctures
-Vermouth/Aromatized Wine/Herbal Liqueurs/Genepi
-Absinthe
-Mead/Beer/Hops
-CBD in cocktails
$25 in advance, $30 the day-of.
