Ayahuasca is a entheogenic brew utilized by indigenous and mestizo populations throughout the Amazon. Its use in traditional, religious and neo-shamanic forms by increasing numbers of people around the planet in recent decades has coincided with an ever-growing interest in its therapeutic and medicinal potentials by western scientists and doctors. Where globalization has forced modernization upon Amazonian indigenous communities an “ayahuasca tourism” industry has bourgeoned and transformed the economic landscape. While the majority of this industry focuses on superficial experience oriented retreats it has opened the door for some sincere spiritual seekers to learn from traditional elders who intend to preserve their knowledge of diagnosis and treatment with Ayahuasca and other plants through a process known as dieta.
This free talk will introduce participants to the spiritual technology of the dieta path in the tradition of the Shipibo-Conibo of the Ucayali region in the Peruvian Amazon and investigate how these practices can translate through modern adaptations for westerners by trained and initiated guides. Additionally, how Ayahuasca itself might aide and accompany various spiritual disciplines will be covered along with an exploration of its possible role in ongoing human evolution and reconnection with nature.
Santiparro Alan Scheurman has been following the path of initiation in sacred healing traditions for a decade. Guided by elders in North, Central and South America, he works with his wife Indy Genao to pass on the wisdom of our ancestral cultures through safe healing rituals and spiritual guidance. Scheurman has trained extensively in Amazonian vegetalismo traditions as well as other shamanic lineages. He has completed more than ten master plant diets in the Shipibo tradition and guides yearly group retreats with his teachers in the Amazon. An accomplished songwriter, his music is available on Apple Music, Spotify and SoundCloud.
This is a donation-based event with all contributions going to the Community Access Fund of the apothecary. This fund provides better access to herbal education and resources for individuals in our community. Suggested donation $1-20 dollars.
