No one wakes up in the morning and decides to become an addict. Our roles as herbalists can include reducing harm, supporting recovery, and even catalyzing a transition away from potentially damaging drug and/or alcohol dependence - but we must start from a place of compassion, context, and understanding. We will start by defining substance abuse and dependence; explore the background and some potential driving factors that can be reasons for these patterns of behavior; briefly touch on conventional treatment and harm reduction strategies; and cover ideas for herbal and nutritional support. The focus will be on alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepenes, tobacco and cannabis - though the ideas presented, and the underlying tonification strategies, are applicable in many cases. Taught by Guido Masé.

Guido is a clinical herbalist, herbal educator, and garden steward specializing in holistic Western herbalism, though his approach is eclectic and draws upon many influences. Guido works clinically and teaches at the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism and the Burlington Herb Clinic, and  is a professional member of the American Herbalists Guild. He is the author of The Wild Medicine Solution: Healing with Aromatic, Bitter and Tonic Plants.
